When Mrs. Corazon T. Villamor founded MMIS more than 27 years ago, she pioneered Montessori education in Cebu. With her vision, determination and guidance, MMIS is what it is today.

 

History

In June of 1984, Maria Montessori International School (MMIS), then called Maria Montessori Children's House, opened its doors in a one-room, barn-like structure along Fuente Osmeña Road with only 27 nursery enrollees during its first school year.

That first batch of students were building blocks for the years that followed. By 1988 the school had complete pre-school and grade school departments for boys and girls and transferred to one of its present sites in Gorordo Avenue, Lahug. A decade later, the high school program was added.

In 2001, the Talamban campus opened another home for the Preschool, Grade school and High School levels. The school eventually changed its name to Maria Montessori International School in 2007. Known for being the pioneer in providing Montessori education in Cebu City, MMIS continues to nurture each child's development into a self-reliant, responsible, and service-oriented individual.

Nature of School

Maria Montessori International School is a Private acadame composed of the preschool as well as Grade School and High School Departments. The Preschool Department has four levels namely: Playgroup, Pre-Kindergartren, Kinder 1 and Kinder 2. Its classroom is a "Prepared enviroment". This is an "Open Classroom" with defined areas for Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Mathematics, and Cultural Activities. It is so designed because it adopts the Montessori Method of Instruction. It uses English as its medium of instruction.

The Grade School and High School Departments on the other hands, have adopted the K-12 Curriculum and its curricula are imbued with the Montessori philosophy which is the development of the whole child.

and of the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (www.ceap.org.ph)

Two notable commendations that MMIS received are the;

  1. 2008 CEM Exemplary School Performance Award (CESPA), making it the only recipient in the region VII for displaying outstanding overall performance of the CEM Diagnostic Test in English, Mathematics, and Science over a period of five school years.
  2. MMIS Principal Dr. Benito F. Sotto was nominated for the national School Leadership Award, and became a finalist in 2009.

Campus Life

Students at MMIS are in the unique position to experience a Montessori lifestyle in a city setting. MMIS offers many of the essential activities that are traditionally associated with student life and its location creates a setting that presents a myriad of non-traditional opportunities that will supplement and accentuate the student experience.

While here, students can join a club. They can join one of our sports teams. MMIS athletics range from Intramural sports to varsity teams. They can develop and engage in a diverse, personal, and spiritual life activities.

Academic Programs

A unique mix of programs across primary and secondary school levels awaits your child at MMIS.

Understanding by Design teaching approach from Grade 1 to Fourth Year High School, and a High School that offers Math electives for all levels. And by adopting a Basic Education set-up, MMIS weeds out the unnecessary and focuses on the areas that truly matter.

Pre-school

The Pre-school takes pride in being the pioneer of Montessori education in Cebu.

MMIS' founder was trained and a member of American Montessori Society. The Pre-school implements AMS - American Montessori Society standards and limits the class size so that each student can get the undivided attention he deserves.

Grade School & Junior High School

Grade School & High School use the Understanding by Design approach imbued with the Montessori philosophy. We believe in nurturing each child so he or she can develop into a self-reliant, independent, responsible, and service-oriented individual.

Senior High School

Music Program

All Grade School and High School Students are offered the opportunity to explore and develop their musical abilities through playing an instrument and participating in ensembles. All students are exposed to recorder (Grade 1 to 3) and violin (Grade 4 to 10) lessons.

Supreme Student Goverment (SSG)

Membership to the SSG aims to hone the skills of students with leadership inclinations through various in-campus and out-campus activities/programs.
